The process of manufacturing entails the entire procedure of converting the raw materials into a finished product. A good understanding of the different aspects of manufacturing engineer jobs will help the prospects to choose the desired field or focus on more than one area of interest. People in the manufacturing field will be able to work in any kind of plant which produces machine parts and electronics. Their job options will range from automobiles to building materials, thus, the job gives flexibility to work in a field of one's interest.

The main responsibility of a manufacturing engineer is to oversee product design, technicalities involved, and manufacturing processes. Job role varies from industry to industry and includes being updated with latest manufacturing technologies, do business negotiations, and streamline manufacturing processes. The engineer needs to analyze the existing processes and make them cost efficient. Maximizing production and allocating work is also done by the manufacturing engineer.

In order to become manufacturing engineers, the job applicant should possess a Bachelor's degree in engineering from a school recognized by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The engineer should complete courses in engineering science, mathematics and control statistics, calculus and other science subjects. If the candidate is interested in career advancement, he or she should be a licensed engineer who has completed a four year degree and four years of practice in a relevant field. Some certifications in the field are:


  • Professional Engineer (PE) Licensure and Certification
  • Manufacturing Technologist Certification (CMfgT)
  • Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE).
  • Certified Engineering Manager (CEM)
Other than the educational qualifications, a manufacturing engineer should have good communication skills and be a person with ability to think critically. Good observational and decision making skills are also required apart from leadership skills. Knowledge in subjects like sociology, English, economics and self development will help them in career advancement. Familiarity with computers will be an added advantage as it has already become an essential part of the engineering design and construction details.

An engineering degree and the training that comes along with it will help a candidate be fit for the profession. There are also several internships which will provide them with an experience of working in real rime environment. Major training programs are available in engineering design graphics which will help the candidate advance in his career.

For a manufacturing engineering job, experience is not essential. There are plenty of inexperienced individuals who come into the field who are provided on-the-job training by the recruited company.

There are many job opportunities for manufacturing engineers who include product planning, growth, testing, analysis and preservation. The manufacturing engineers will be able to work in public organizations once they have taken and passed a state licensing examination.

Manufacturing engineers earn higher salaries than other degree holding professionals. The amount of pay will depend upon the experience an individual has and the industry in which the candidate is working.

Manufacturing engineers will have the advantage of working in a wide variety of industries as the basic manufacturing rules are applicable to almost all companies in this field. This profession is appropriate for those who always stay updated with new and innovative ideas and techniques.
