Maintenance Supervisor - 2nd Shift

Summary:
To plan, organize and manage the maintenance function through the effective utilization of team members. Performs duties to obtain quality workmanship and scheduled in a timely manner to meet production scheduling. Coordinates emergency repairs efficiently and effectively to minimize downtime. Works in assigned areas of maintenance specialty as required.
Responsibilities:
Plans and schedules all maintenance activities required to maintain the efficient and safe operation of all processing equipment. Assigns work orders, repair, construction and service work to all assigned personnel as needed. Prioritizes work to be done based on communications with production personnel and superiors. Informs Superintendent of problems affecting maintenance work order schedule.
Schedules individual team members to projects. Shifts team members as needed to achieve optimum completion of work orders and to service emergency work requests. Recommends and authorizes weekend and overtime work.
Assists in determining maintenance and repair needs by inspecting all systems and subsystems and studying all work order requests. Determines nature of problem and assigns work as required. Assists in preparation and implementation of preventative maintenance measures.
Monitors completion of maintenance projects to ensure that safety and quality standards are met. Maintains the quality and quantity of work performed in compliance with all applicable company policies and procedures. Makes a final inspection of all difficult or complex repair and maintenance jobs.
Coordinates activities of maintenance areas with production departments to minimize the amount of interference with production. Of special concern is the complete overhaul of processing equipment which leads to major production shutdowns.
Directs the movement of machinery as needed during all remodeling and construction projects. Coordinates with vendors, suppliers and contractors the installation of new equipment or equipment processes. Works closely with R&D to test the operation of all new processing equipment or procedures.
Maintains maintenance records. Requisitions new and replacement parts and supplies for new projects, coordinating their purchase with materials management. Orders repair parts and inventory needed for maintenance unit.
Supervises team members; handles employee grievances and complaints within established policy; makes recommendations on hires, terminations, transfers, promotions, training, disciplining and other appropriate activities in accordance with established policy.
Performs work in area of specialty within the total maintenance function such as plumbing, electrical/electronics, sheet metal, utilities, mechanical maintenance or special assigned area within the plant. Although incumbent may be trained in one or more specialty areas, job responsibility is in supervision of overall maintenance function.
Develops and maintains solid performance management and performance team concepts and practices to fulfil the organization’s participative management philosophy. Assures safety practices and procedures are followed in their department.
Take appropriate action to ensure the integrity of the SQF System. Report any issues to appropriate facility management.
Work schedule is dependent on production schedules and could be 6 or 7 days, weekends and nights may also be needed to cover production. Typical workday is a 10-hour shift.
Administrative duties to include audits, monthly inspections, time management of self and team members, Computerized Maintenance Management System, PM reviews, modifications and creation, and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of one or more specialty areas within the maintenance field is required.
Education & Experience: A bachelor’s degree in a maintenance specialty with 5 years previous maintenance experience and 2 years supervisory experience preferred. In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, 4 years of industrial maintenance experience and demonstrated supervisory skills is required.
Familiarity with meat processing machinery is preferred. Requires independent judgment with analytical skills in formulating decisions concerning similar problems with similar solutions. Works within general guidelines and policies of the maintenance department.
Supports site-wide maintenance function, including packaging, process, mechanical, electrical, building maintenance and stationary engineering. Works to improve the reliability of production lines & ensure machinery down times are reduced. Works to optimize maintenance and operating efficiencies through minimizing operating costs and implementing key performance indicators and measurements. Works with Engineering & Technical Services to ensure seamless introduction of capital projects, taking facility to the next level of sophistication in terms of automation. Ensures regulatory compliance in health & safety, environmental standards and equipment operations.
Manages employees. Directs and supervises employees' work activities and monitors work performance. Administers disciplinary actions and recommends performance improvement actions in collaboration with the HR Manager.
Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical, safety and preventative maintenance programs. Preference for experience leading a maintenance team. Willingness to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction required. Must be able to read and write English. Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resource management, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources. Must be familiar with computers and be proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
Works with Maintenance Training Supervisor to develop the Maintenance Team Members through DuPont training requirements, hands on lab training and on the job training.
Will be required to develop the soft skills needed to successfully manage to accomplish a high-performance work team.
Will utilize lean principles such as Gemba, Root Cause Problem Solving and the Plan Do Check Act cycle.
