Job Description Job Summary
Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Certified Water Treatment Plant Operator operates and maintains water treatment, processing, disposal and testing equipment in water treatment facility to purify water to meet permit and operational requirements. The incumbent will also be the on site Health and Safety Officer. 
Primary responsibilities
Monitors SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) and adjusts process to meet and exceed effluent limits at all times. Duties included but not limited to obtaining process water for sampling and adjusting process based on results;
Monitors flow meters, gauges, flow ratios, pressures and related controls through instrument panels, computer terminals and programmable logic control units in assigned area;
Monitors and records operating conditions, observations and data in area shift log;
Ensures conformance to process specifications; 
Troubleshoots and diagnoses operational problems and takes corrective action as per set procedure; 
Verifies and reports suspected malfunctions and variances to supervisor when an issue arises; 
Performs routine and preventative maintenance and maintenance related items as assigned; 
Attends safety related courses; 
Coordinates safety vendors with preventative maintenance work orders; 
Performs on site safety related work orders; 
Orders safety supplies;
Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process; 
Monitors process chemical supplies and reorders when required;  
Performs lab tests applicable to permit testing and related reports as per set procedure;
Performs instrument calibration for portable and benchtop meters including, but not limited to pH, turbidity, chlorine, color and gas detector; 
Practices good housekeeping in assigned area and properly disposes of waste according to safety and environmental policies; 
Performs monthly safety related work orders; 
Contacts vendors and makes the arrangements for safety related inspections;
Performs manual labor;
Performs minor maintenance including, but not limited to, routine preventive maintenance and minor adjustments;
Operates vehicles for plant operational purposes;
Practices good housekeeping within all facilities. All team members take part in a bi-weekly cleaning of the entire facility;
Assists in other areas of plant as needed.
Qualifications Requirements and skills needed
Post-Secondary education or equivalent in the field of Engineering or Environmental Science with the ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational, process, safety and quality instructions). Must have the ability to perform math equations.  
Holds a certified water treatment operator Level one as a minimum and the desire and willingness to obtain the highest certification level. Certification is mandatory.
Six months to two years’ experience in a related position and environment with knowledge of the methods, techniques, and practices of water treatment is mandatory.
Must consistently demonstrate the ability to learn and operate all analyzers, machines and equipment meeting or exceeding processing and quality targets under general supervision.
Must have the ability to diagnose process problems regardless of complexity, troubleshoot equipment and take corrective action within policy and procedure limitations.
Must demonstrate a working ability to use computer programs such as excel, word, Gmail and also for process control.
Must demonstrate proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), including respirators, gas detectors, confined space equipment, etc.) The role of being the on-site Health and Safety Officer will require the ordering of safety supplies when required, calibration of safety equipment and arranging for quarterly / semiannual and annual inspections of all Health and Safety equipment. 
Ability to write safety related site specific standard operating procedures.
Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
Must be able to be placed into the role as a rotational duty operator. While performing the role as the duty operator, you must be available for after hour call outs.
Employee Orientation, Departmental Operating Procedures, Safety, WHMIS, CPR,
Cross-training if feasible.
Must become proficient in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), including respirators, gas detectors, confined space equipment, etc.).
Work toward higher level water treatment certification. 
May perform more advanced functions as part of training and development.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
Work Environment
Spends 50% of time in operations environment and the remaining 50% is on safety.  May need to work outside in inclement weather conditions and drive company vehicle to perform duties.
May be exposed to possible operations hazards including caustic and acidic chemicals, heavy machinery, confined space entries, hot or cold work environment temperatures, slippery surfaces, water hazards and electrical equipment.
Amount of time spent – Standing 25%, Walking 25%, Sitting 50%.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch and enter confined spaces. Required to use ladders or stairs.
The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (occasionally 60 pounds).  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Requires close visual observation to detect process non-conformance and machine malfunction.
