A role with Engineering and Technical Design means being on a team of engineers and technical designers who create products that truly embody the intent of Target-owned brands. Can you ensure that each product has that just-right mix of style, quality and value? Do you love to create technical product solutions that help meet strategic business goals? Then you’ll have success on our talented and innovative team. Here, you’ll partner with our quality and compliance teams to understand performance testing protocols and develop products that meet them. Your work can help identify technical specifications and quality standards like raw materials, fit and function, construction details and dimensions. You’ll leverage collective expertise to suggest improvements to cost of goods, assembly, sustainability and ROI. You’ll also collaborate with vendors to ensure that the brand vision is clearly understood and successfully brought to life with every product we offer.
As a Principal Product Engineer
, you will be the primary technical expert for the essentials tissue and paper category and responsible for influencing and driving the overall product vision for owned brand products to ensure differentiation from competition. You will leverage your extensive breadth and depth of specialized experience to develop guest-centric product solutions in partnership with key internal partners, external companies, vendors, and suppliers. You’ll develop, drive, and advance the technical training curriculum and industry networking opportunities to advance our research and development efforts and build Target’s reputation as a great place to work, learn, develop and advance.
In addition, you will lead and innovate Technical Design/Engineering as part of a cross-functional team focused on advancing owned brand products and strategic initiatives while proactively working to implement supporting technical solutions. In partnership with both internal and external partners, you will innovate performance testing protocols while leading your team and vendors to proactively anticipate manufacturing and quality issues. Likewise, you’ll develop industry-changing products and/or processes, ensuring owned brand products are leading the industry and driving long-term benefits to Target. Finally, you’ll develop and expand a strategic network of contacts to position Target as an informed industry leader and grow transformational vendor/supplier partnerships that proactively drive our business strategies associated with co-development, innovation, quality improvements, cost transparencies, and formula exclusivity.

About You:
Four-year degree in Pulp and Paper Science / Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Engineering or equivalent based on specialization, or equivalent experience
12+ years related industry experience, preferably in consumer product development with tissue and paper products
Strong problem solving skills and creative thinking skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills – ability to synthesize & communicate emerging science and engineering knowledge succinctly
Ability to think strategically and conceptually
Ability to successfully work in a team environment
Business understanding and acumen
Strong project management skills
