POSITION SUMMARY
 

As a process engineer in the Research & Development organization, the successful candidate executes projects of that will benefit Hardie from a durability, quality, new process, efficiency, and safety standpoint.   The R&D Process Engineer learns and understands various manufacturing processes within the business and utilizes this knowledge to interact with Manufacturing and various other groups to implement new solutions and processes for new product innovation developed by the R&D teams.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
 

 

Identify and resolve key forming process related in a wide range of projects that will include new product launches, platform improvements, process upgrades that impact the quality and manufacturability of new products in early stage plant trials on a sheet machine (70%)

 

*Coordinate and/or participate in pilot and factory trials on new technologies and improved technologies *Coordinate efforts and foster collaboration within cross-functional project teams consisting of R&D Scientists, Plant, Design, Construction and Quality Engineers, EH&S, vendors, plant floor operators and maintenance technicians. *Work on scaling up new technology products for early stage plant trials *Lead plant trials for various technologies, including planning, execution and reporting of results *Plan and map out all parameters needed to drive product quality at the earliest stages of development *Champion Process Innovation to improve the efficiency of the current forming methods leading to higher yield and throughput, particularly with new products *Network with other Process engineers in all plants to freely share and implement best practices. *Utilize effective project management skills to deliver R&D projects on schedule and target, as well as assisting and supporting other project teams or groups within the department when needed
 

 

Actively leads and supports the plant safety program by:  (10%)

 

*Apply 5S philosophy with R&D environments and all JH locations *Complete monthly OSHA mandated training *Ensure a safe work environment through good housekeeping and equipment operations *Promote safety culture by leading and participating in various safety initiatives
 

Develops and manages capital projects by:  (20%)

 

*Identify improvement opportunities; *Organize teams to help in research efforts; *Write Capital Expenditure Requests (CER); and *Coordinate and implement projects.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

REQUIRED:

*Understanding of manufacturing equipment including fluid and air conveying systems, drive systems, and machine controls. *Demonstrated ability to effectively take action to solve problems while exhibiting sound judgment and successful stress tolerance. *Knowledgeable of Lean, Six Sigma and 5S principles in a manufacturing environment *Demonstrated ability to act independently upon information and make decisions that achieve optimal results. *Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with the ability to relate well and cooperate with others to effectively coordinate activities and accomplish goals. *Demonstrated intermediate skills with the standard features of various personal computer word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Word and Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet, and other proprietary software). *Demonstrated ability to think ahead and plan over a 30-day time span and prepare action plans to achieve results. *Ability to balance and achieve positive results in the areas of quality, productivity and cost. *Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload while paying attention to detail. *Demonstrated ability to function as a strong team player.
 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED:

*Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (mechanical, chemical, electro-mechanical, industrial, paper science). *3-5 years of process engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, heavy industrial manufacturing preferred *Experience developing and implementing process improvements throughout a manufacturing plant *Project Management experience *Minitab or other statistical process control experience preferred *AutoCAD or Solid Works experience a plus
 

QUANTITATIVE DIMENSIONS
DECISION MAKING:

The Process Engineer uses professional experience and accepted best practices to design and implement process improvements. 

SUPERVISORY/LEAD RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent may be responsible for influencing various project teams to execute projects associated to improving the efficiency of the manufacturing process.

SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Process Engineer, working closely with the Department Managers, Project Teammates to evaluate effectiveness and efficiency.
