Job Description
The Paper Mill Manager
is responsible for stock preparation and the production of tissue paper on Paper Machines #1 and #3 that meets all quality specificiations within budgeted tonnage and costs. Additionally, the Paper Mill Manager manages the Boiler Operations, as well as the Maintenenance (Mechanical and Electrical) areas. This individual reports directly into the General Manager of the site.
In this role, you will:
Ensure that safety methods and procedures are followed within the department to assure compliance with Kruger policies
Manage and execute daily activities of manufacturing department to meet customer and company demands and expectations.
Responds to grievances, and manages union personnel to include participating in recruitment selection process
Analyze and assess short-term and long term action plans for the continual improvement of the department to meet maximum operating efficiency.
Maintain a quality focus and be directly involved in any complaints: establish processes so customer and/or internal complaints are minimized.
Helps establish acceptable waste standards and monitors such activity to maintain the lowest percentage of waste possible. Develop and implement of cost reduction programs.
Review and analyze reports and data and make recommendations to improve; oversee the accuracy of department related reports.
Partner with HR personnel to develop and support the new employee selection process.
Develop and implement a high performance work system for the Paper Mill Team:
Define leadership roles and hire for those roles
Lead process in defining operating roles crew structures, etc.
Manages production to ensure quality of base paper to meet or exceed budgeted cost levels to meet sales requirements. Adhere to production schedules and advise General Mill Manager of any problems
Work with plant maintenance manager supervisor to prioritize, develop and manage day-in-and-day out machine maintenance and preventative maintenance program (PM’s).
Manage supply inventory to assure adequate operating supplies which includes the assurance that materials required for the operations are available, yet not in excess and that downtime is prevented because of shortage.
Conduct performance evaluations, and administer corrective action when appropriate and ensures adherence to all company policies and procedures
Work to maintain the operational budget and assist in developing the budget when required
Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and timely notice of violation if applicable.
Develop and implement a structured program to continuously drive paper mill productivity to best in class levels.
All Supervisory personnel are responsible to ensure that their employees have the needed competencies to apply the operating procedures so that environmental controls are adequately implemented
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical etc.), Pulp & Paper Science or related field
Minimum of 5 years experience leading an operational group in a manufacturing operation, preferably tissue paper manufacturing
Experience working in a unionized environment preferred
Solid interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively coach, teach, and manage people.
Excellent communication and presentation skills (both written and verbal).
Excellent troubleshooting skills (technical and other).
The ability to demonstrate fundamental economic skills and thinking.
Demonstrated operational results showing year-over-year improvement. Must have work experience showing leadership capabilities to move the organization.
Demonstrated technical tissue paper making knowledge and skills ideal.
Principles of supervision, and performance evaluations
Ability to work as part of a team and with production management.
Provide consultation, coaching, facilitation or teaching with employees.
Ability to plan, organize, execute and works to specific goals and objectives
Ability to change and adapt to new situations
Promote change and growth as key to sustained success and a way of life establishes trust with employees through support, goal setting, action planning, and follow up
Office procedures, methods, including computers and applicable CMMS, SAP, Microsoft Office and other applicable software and databases
Talent Management and retention
Key Competencies including: candor/integrity, influencing & building partnerships, team work, accountability, problem solving, and customer focus
