As Chemicals Production Unit Manager (PUM), you have the responsibility, accountability and authority to manage the short and long-term asset management and operation of the Production Unit to achieve the business plan targets, and to operate the assets in a manner that is compliant. You will also play a significant commercial interface role with our business partners in Calgary and Houston

What’s the role?

You will set the direction and expectations for performance in your Production Unit (PU), remove barriers to performance, and provide recognition and coaching as necessary.

Other accountabilities include:


Understand and comply with all requirements for ensuring personal safety and all staff in the PU. Additionally, provide support to ensure that all operations are safe and environmentally compliant. Equally as important, is to foster a compliant and safe mindset towards Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) incidents.
Support reviews and modifications of operations’ procedures and guidelines to ensure all are updated and followed.
Ensure that incidents are reported and investigated.
Deliver Monthly Operating Plan (MOP) as agreed with Economy and Scheduling (E&S), and preparation of Site Value Growth Plan. Monitor unit performance relative to the MOP and unit/plant goals (Technical Availability, Controllable Production Losses, Maximum Capacity Utilization, etc.)
Facilitate and remove barriers that prevent continuous improvement and simplification of work process by working with and seeking input from the operating shift teams and staff by using Lean Tools, audits and Causal Learning; therefore, driving sustainable improvements in the various performance areas.
Ensure correct implementation of Ensure Safe Production (ESP) concepts and proper management of abnormal situations and escalation philosophy.
Ensure long-term threats to the business plan are inputted and risk scored into the Manage Threats and Opportunities (MTO) database.
Promote and maintain constructive and collaborative relations with staff from other functions such as Maintenance, Process Engineering, Engineering, HSSE, E&S, Human Resources (HR), project, etc.
Manage the Production budget including operator over time, materials and process chemicals as well as managing asset budget and assuring overall chemicals budget to targets.
Assures that the Unit meets all compliance requirements and has systems in place to accomplish this. Assures that systems used (generic or unit specific) are adequate and functioning to deliver the desired results.
Support and drive of leadership development. Provides coaching to the PTLs and Production Supervisor as well as peer coaching to other extended Leadership Team Members.
Participates actively in best practice sharing & implementation with peers both on site and at other manufacturing sites.
Work with the Site Leadership Team, Extended Leadership Team, and production staff to develop implementation plans for new initiatives for the site. Should ensure that new initiatives are implemented consistently across the production units and have appropriate production input and buy-in.
Provide adequate production resources to successfully engineer, construct, and start up new projects. Training for operators and operating procedures will need to be delivered by the production resources as outlined in the Operations Readiness Plan.
Ensure the appropriate production staffing is assigned to turnarounds and that plans are in place to deliver good shutdown and decontamination plans as well as start-up plans.
During turnaround, monitor production plan and help units make adjustments as necessary, report status, and understand and approve additional work requests.
Ensure adequate competences for the staff in the PU through identification of competence gaps and adequate training programs and plans.
Accountable for delivering all aspects of operator training through the Production Supervisor.

What we need from you


Engineering background with experience in supporting or managing large units in a Refinery or Upgrader or similar operating asset.
Problem solving skills and a deep understanding of safety management and reliability.
In-depth operational knowledge and experience within Manufacturing.
Good leadership skills, with the ability to relate to both staff and hourly employees.
Knowledge of Emergency Response protocols would be advantageous.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Coaching and facilitation skills; ability to deliver training and facilitate meetings.
Lean and continuous improvement skills.
Understanding of production policies and procedures.
Strong leadership skills.
Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
Ability to define issues, collect data and draw valid conclusions
Strong organization and task management skills that deliver the work products
Experience leading in Unionized environment considered an asset.
